When hubs got his new phone, Verizon also offered us 2 Fitbits with the deal, that we now use daily - I've told the silly tale of how we have step contests during commercial breaks. A few weeks later, Maxwell Health sent me a Jawbone UP to 'up the ante' - haha get it?! ((rolls my own eyes)) These two lovely health-driven devices not both measure steps taken throughout the day, very pedometer-like. The difference with the UP is that it also measures your sleep patterns when you adjust the modes on it as well - monitoring light and deep sleep and how long you take to fall asleep!
Wait a second? Who is Maxwell Health?

Nothing is more important than being healthy, and it takes more than great insurance to stay that way. The choices you make every day—whether to exercise, what to eat for dinner, when to schedule your next doctor's visit—have the potential to improve your health and lower health care costs. That's why we built Maxwell: to combine the protection of insurance with everyday support to help you make healthy choices.
Maxwell is the first company to pair the highest quality health plans in the country with world-class wellness services and technology. Your Maxwell membership includes medical and dental insurance, fitness and nutrition coaching, physician recommendations, claims advice, a health and fitness tracker, and rewards for activity. You can depend on Maxwell to bring together all the resources you need to manage your health in one place, with round-the-clock professional support just an e-mail or phone call away.
* All members receive their choice of a Fitbit Zip or Jawbone UP, and they hook their fitness tracker into the Maxwell Health mobile app to track activity in exchange for rewards!
* Each day, the steps members take are translated into points. For every 100 steps, members earn 1 point. One coin is earned after 500 points. Coins are the currency used to redeem for rewards in the Rewards Store: options include Amazon, Best Buy, Bliss Spa, iTunes, Starbucks, and Toys ‘R Us.
* Wellness program members are connected with a health coach who designs a unique plan tailored to each member’s specific goals, exercise and eating preferences. Coaches interact with members by phone, email, or text message, to keep them motivated and provide tips based on their wellness plan and goals. All coaches are certified by Wellcoaches School of Coaching and have undergone rigorous training.
* The Wellness program also provides members with a newsletter, health updates from Cleveland Clinic, and other information to ensure they are maximizing their health care investment.

My Fitbit a.k.a. Omar

So, what am I doing?
Wearing both devices and compare what I find as if I were a Maxwell Health member & see how many rewards I'd earn!
So far, I have to say I dig the Fitbit. It's neat, easy, convenient. I, however, feel that the steps are a bit off (only because it goes off of height/weight and the UP seems to give me more a day) and doesn't stay on your wrist. Hubs has been overheard many times during the day saying "Dangit! I forgot to put on my Fitbit!" as I snicker in the corner. The UP stays on your wrist and since it's waterproof, you tend to forget it's there.
My initial review of the Fitbit would be that it's geared more towards someone starting out on their fitness journey. Someone who wants to start tracking their steps so that they have a baseline of how many they normally take and then work to get more by going on walks and being more active vs. sedentary. I still think it's an awesome fitness device, but do have a favorite already ;)
I'll be doing an overall review of both products including a comparison in about a month of how I did with my activity! ;) Then, I can see how I could be rewarded through Maxwell Health based on my overall health!Maxwell Health launches nationally this week, so be sure to check out their website for more tidbits of info and find out how you can be rewarded for your healthy habits!
Oh and by the way: Kris, Hubs, and myself have been trying out a new Crossfit Box!
We've been taking their week on on-ramp courses & I like it! I'm learning so much more about form! Kris and hubs are loving the higher intensity shorter workouts too! I'll be talking about it more once I start taking classes next week!

Do you use a pedometer/fitness gadget to measure your workouts?
Would you enjoy being REWARDED for your healthy habits instead of health issues being looked at?
I have always been a NO NO NO GADGET woman.
ReplyDelete(I suck at technology--nothing more than that :-))
until lately.
I be curious.
haha usually I am and thought many of these gadgets were just for show - but to get rewarded for all of my activity sounds awesome!
DeleteI looove my FitBit, but I wish it could monitor heart rates for a more accurate burn.
ReplyDeleteCrazy that Verizon is giving away FitBits now. What WON'T they do? Haha
Curious to hear your end thoughts on Maxwell. Reminds me a bit of Earndit.com - similar concept.
Yea, I was surprised they threw them in too!
DeleteI just use my iPhone to track runs. Nothing else...
ReplyDeleteI bought my husband the Nike Fuel band for his birthday in November and it was such a waste of $. I thought that he would use it and it would motivate him to get back into shape, but I think that he is only used it a handful of times. Even more irritating is that he really wanted one and wouldn't stop talking about how he wanted one. If it weren't so big, then maybe I would use it!
ReplyDeleteI thought the Fuel band was a crock too. I like the concept of these gadgets for friendly competition - too bad you guys can't both have one! - and for monitoring for health habits that companies can reward! I have heard of other companies having contests for teams that get to 10k steps a day etc OR rewarding individuals with 10k steps a day
DeleteSounds interesting! I don't have a FitBit but have heard lots about them. Can't wait to hear your comparison!
ReplyDeletei'm pretty much going to be stalking these updates because i'm in the market for a tracker. FitBit is about to come out with the Flex, a wristband similar to the UP. Our CEO got all of his direct reports an UP for Christmas this past year and now he's saying he doesn't really care for it and prefers his FitBit "One".
ReplyDeleteI'm wanted to hold out for the Flex because, like you, i always forget to put on my current rinky-dink pedometer but i take the stairs a lot and the Flex doesn't track stairs and it looks like the UP doesn't either.
BUT i really like how the UP reminds you when you've been inactive, has mood tracking and that power nap features seems soooo freaking cool!
so, yeah, i'm going to "stalk" your reviews <3
Haha stalk me Rina! I will definitely let you know how it goes and usually post up my steps on instagram with screen shots - I love waking up every day and seeing how well I slept the night before! It's definitely made me turn off gadgets and drown out noise so I can get deeper sleep!
DeleteI think it's about time the focus has shifted to treating illness to preventing them! Kudos for a company to reward health! I am not techy at all but lately I've been using some gadgets ie HRM and pedometer and have to say its been enlightening!
ReplyDeleteI agree Marcia! Why dump meds into people with illnesses when you can encourage them to get up and active?!
DeleteI've tried pedometers in the past but most don't accurately count steps. Right now my gadget of choice is my garmin for running. I've heard lots about FitBit - sounds cool!
ReplyDeleteI stick with my tabata timer and HR monitor...great to measure progress and kick your butt!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to try a gym boss too. Many companies now go to these gadgets to rewards employees with 10k steps worth of activity a day etc and maybe that'll encourage peeps to get up and moving!
DeleteFor one of my previous internships, I got to test a Fitbit, and it was really cool! It was supposed to monitor sleeping patterns too (I think), but it didn't exactly work. Probably due to me. ;) Glad you're enjoying the gadgets!
ReplyDeletehaha I like the Jawbone, pretty darn accurate
DeleteMy previous healthcare provider did something similar. I loved the incentive. I got so many free running shoes and race admissions thanks to those incentives. :)
ReplyDeleteOooh you sneaky devil you! ;)
DeleteEmbarassing to admit, but I am really a sucker for data. I started off with Body Media armband. To me, this is really the most accurate calorie wise but awkward to wear as who wants a giant band around their arm. I wear it mainly in the winter. It is great for sleep patterns though.
ReplyDeleteI had fun wih the Fitbit when I first got it, then kinda got out of tracking my daily calories once I committed to Paleo and the Fitbit kind of went by the wayside. It is a pain to track sleep with IMO because it attaches to the wrist and for us stomach sleepers who tend to sleep on their arms at times, not good.
Now, Nike Fuel. OH how I had to have this! I got it for Christmas and really, just dont like it but still wear it because there is something empowering about the cool graphics you get when you meet your goal. It is simple and basic focusing on movement. On the down side, my nice white ice is now kind of a creepy beige. I mainly keep it on as I feel guilty as it is so new.
That being said, I do LOVE data and really want to track again since I am doing the 13 halfs. I would love to get my hands on a Jawbone UP since this seems like the best of all 3, plus the graphics look really cool on the web. Kind of like a fitbit for the wrist and waterproof is a plus as I ruined my first fitbit in the pool. Not sure if Jawbone is good with saltwater though?
Sorry, kinda took over with mini reviews, lol but I really love data! #runnernerd 100x
haha I understand your points g irlie, no worries! I haven't gotten the UP wet just yet but it's supposed to be waterproof?
DeleteVery cool! I've seen Maxwell Health around and it's cool to learn more about it from a blogger friend! :)
ReplyDeleteof course, they're a great group of peeps and I love the concept!
DeleteI'm interested in the UP - love how its simple to put on and leave on. I have used Body Media Fit before but it is weird to wear it on your arm all the time.
ReplyDeleteI've gotten really used to it - they come in all different sizes Sm, Med, etc. so they fit your wrist to size!
DeleteHow many steps u got today?! Huh? huh? ;)
ReplyDeletealmost at 10k son! ;) hahhahaa
DeleteLol not me :/ surprisingly my abs r still the sorest lol i didny kno i used then yesterday lol
DeleteVery cool--I think it would be really fun to see how much you walk every day like that. And kudos on joining the box--let us know what you think!
ReplyDeletethanks girl, I'm really liking box #2!
DeleteI think all of the movement data is interesting, but I really don't know if it would help me that much? I love my Garmin, but don't know that I'd need anything besides that. But, the sleep data would probably be really helpful since I tend to slack in that area. Oops.
ReplyDeleteYea I use my Garmin too - I just know that for my work (benefits) I have to track all activity to get credit (i.e. if I go to Crossfit, there's no measurement for that) so totally love that aspect of it!
DeleteI love my jawbone! I have some work to do still to figure everything out, but my favorite part is the sleep tracking... I need to focus on the amount of sleep I get for sure!
ReplyDeleteLet me know if you ever need any help Mindy!
DeleteI am very interested in Maxwell! I'm bummed that my company doesn't do anything to reward healthy habits and our insurance is so expensive. Looking forward to a full review!
ReplyDeleteThose are really neat!!
ReplyDeleteYou have now introduced me to Maxwell Health! I love the whole idea of tracking your steps AND tracking your sleeping pattern. I have actually been researching different pedometers, but haven't found the right one for me. I am excited to hear about the difference between the two after the month!
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to help you with gaining more info on Maxwell and their awesome services!
DeleteI've seen Maxwell Health floating around in the blogosphere. I am very interested in what they have to offer. Our ins is so expensive as it is through John's work. It's nice to know there are other options.
ReplyDeletetotally true! They're very active on twitter so feel free to ask them any questions you have!
DeleteThese gadgets intrigue me, epecially one that gives rewards! Can't wait to read your reviews and hear about your prizes. And yes, you need to beat hubby every day!
ReplyDeletehaha, nothing wrong with a little friendly competition ;)
Deletehmmmm interesting!! I am more of a pen and paper gal myself, but I always wear my HR monitor!
ReplyDeleteThat totally works too! Crazy how a lot of US insurance companies are looking to track activity with these kinds of gadgets!
DeleteTotally love the idea of being rewarded for fitness or healthy habits in general! It's just such a way to put things in a positive light instead the standard, i won't do this or ...
ReplyDeleteExactly my friend!
DeleteHow fun -- I've never used anything to track...maybe I should? PS YAY for new boxes!! I love trying other boxes when I visit people or places -- wish I traveled more for work or a professional box reviewer :)
ReplyDeleteThat would be super fun, good idea! ;)
