Take me to Sugar Rehab!

Sugar, oh glorious sugar!

As much as I know it's bad for me, something draws me back to it - could it be the sweet taste of toffee or the insides of a Rolo that pull me in? Regardless, I need help! I couldn't be happier that I am no longer receiving tins of cookies on my desk or candy canes from unknown senders!

I have talked about my issues with sugar here on the blog off and on. I'd like to think that I'm not the only one struggling to tackle sweets and get them out of my diet as much as possible. Bueller...Bueller??

Are you like me?

I've decided to do a weekly post on Wednesdays called "Sugar Rehab" to help me get out of this 'rut' for 2013!

Here I'll talk about:
* Struggles for the week a.k.a. Tempting encounters
* Successes taming the sugar beast
* Plans to keep progress moving forward
I'm hoping things don't get as crazy as Celebrity Rehab though!

My goal is to create balance. There can be rare treats here and there...no one's going to sit in time-out for a mini Tootsie Roll once a month. Sweets are okay to an extent, it just depends on the sweet, IMO.

How was this week? Tough!
When it's close to 'that time of the month when the she-devil visits' things seem worse for me. I was very good with veggies and balancing our meals that we made at home and at out. However, my cravings have been worse. I've turned to my Butter Pecan froyo (gotta love Publix) when I need a spoonful to satisfy that monster. Honestly, besides a Rice Krispie treat at NYE, I wasn't too badly behaved! I do remember going to the pantry in search of the ever-elusive bar of chocolate that danced in my head only to find there was none there. If it's not near me, I won't eat it!

Want to join in this quest to successfully conquer Sugar Rehab with me? Come on, I need partners in crime! It sure would be nice to have company while I'm in the hole ;)

Grab this button and link up weekly!

Do you have a monster sweet tooth like me or are you a savory-type person?

  12. I love sugar. Always have. I'm to the point where I've cut a lot of processed foods out, but I also will not deny myself a bit of sweet when I want it. Sometimes it can be appeased with fruit or something healthy, but sometimes I just HAVE to have some chocolate. I keep a bag of hershey's kisses in the fridge, and if I allow myself a couple, then I don't bottle up that "need" and go on a raging sugar binge. Great idea for the link up!

    1. I did the coffee kick a couple of years ago and was MEAN when I did it but now no longer have the cravings for it! I think the coffee was more for the feeling/being awake - Candy and sweets lure me in because they taste good and in the office-environment they're everywhere!

  14. Oh yes, definitely have a sweet tooth. I think runners bodies crave the quick energy sources, and sugar is one of the best! I'm constantly trying to cut back too. I usually limit it only to dark chocolate, and I have noticed other sweet things now taste too sweet, but I also take in more dark chocolate daily than is recommended... :)

    1. I agree with you Laura! that's totally me! I know I can kick it, but it's a tough one - especially once a month ;)

  15. It is a tough one to kick, no doubt! Sugar seems to beget sugar. My best defense has been eating a bit of dark chocolate every day--seems to take care of the cravings without creating more. good luck with it!

  17. I have a little bit of a sweet tooth every once in a while, but for the most part I have a really bad carbohydrate craving in the form of bread. After dinner, though, my body does crave sweets because I always grew up thinking that dessert was what came after dinner.

  18. I definitely have a sweet tooth hangover right now after the holidays. It's usually not too bad at other times but the holidays are the worst! I try not to deny myself - that just makes it worse - and find other healthy substitutes like a piece of dark chocolate or a some sweet potato. Good luck!!

  20. Love the blog "facelift"--so clean and crisp! Right before Aunt Flo visits my sugar/chocolate cravings are out of control. *Sigh* What's a girl to do? Other than then, I do fairly good job of keeping cravings in check, although I'll never say no to a square of dark chocolate. ;)

  23. I did a sugar detox in November and it was WAY harsh. No fruit, no natural sugar, nothing. What you're doing is completely balanced and a great way to go about detoxing. You'll do great, Kat! (Even when the she-devil strikes.)

    1. Yes I know! I'm not giving up fruit as I do get low BS lol BS but I want no bad sugars! Flo sucks!

  24. Ahhh sugar! It's the hardest to kick. The problem is that once you have some it just jacks up you blood sugar levels for the rest of the day and you craaaaave it!

I keep applesauce on hand to curb my cravings. At least it real sugar. Also, try adding cinnamon if possible. It helps stabilize your bloodsugar, which will keep it from spiking and dipping and make you want more. I put it in my oatmeal when I add honey, and sometimes in my apple sauce. Also good in chocolate protein smoothies and things like that.

Good luck, look forward to reading about your journey.

  25. The number of blog posts I have written about my sugar addiction is ridiculous. There is a reason I want us to be Willy Wonka....so I can eat all the candy! All! All!All!

  26. Sugar is most definitely my biggest weakness in fitness. I do very well when I control my sugar intake. I can not out work out my sweet tooth. The only way I have any success is to not buy any sweets. If I do not have them in the house it is easier to beat back the sugar beast.
